Wheat

So, we went to Wheat Community Center. Paul and I stocked selves, which we took over from Heidi and Lynise. The lady showed us were to put stuff in Spanish. It was easy work and cool to do. Also there was some nice things in the shop area of the center.

Feliz Navidad

Feliz Navidad is a Christmas song written in 1970 by the Puerto Rican singer-songwriter José Feliciano. With its simple Spanish chorus (the traditional Christmas/New Year greeting, "Feliz Navidad, próspero año y felicidad" or "Merry Christmas, prosperous year and happiness") and equally simple English verse ("I wanna wish you a Merry Christmas from the bottom of my heart"), it has become a classic Christmas pop song in the United States, Canada and throughout the Spanish-speaking world.
Feliciano's version of "Feliz Navidad" (in which he plays both an acoustic guitar and a Puerto Rican cuatro) is one of the most downloaded and aired Christmas songs in the United States and Canada. It was also recognized by ASCAP as one of the top 25 most played and recorded Christmas songs around the world.

La Bamba

Ok so I decided to do this before Heidi took my ideas again. "La Bamba" is a folk song whose origins can be traced to the Mexican state of Veracruz over 300 years ago. It is best known from a 1958 adaptation by Ritchie Valens, a top 40 hit in the the U.S. charts and one of early rock and roll's best-known songs. The youtube clip that is on my blog is from a 1987 movie called La Bamba, staring Lou Diamond Phillips as Ritchie Valens.

Another Little Bit of History

The Spanish-American War started in 1898. It was because the US believed that the Spanish blow up the USS Maine in Havana Harbor in Cuba. After Congress declared war in April of 1898 the rallying cry was "Remember the Maine!, To hell with Spain!". The US would win the war and gain control of the Philippine Islands, Puerto Rico would become a US protectorate, and Cuba would become the puppets of the US for economic reasons.

Cielito Lindo

Here is a little history of one of the songs that we sing for class. "Cielito Lindo" is a popular traditional song of Mexico, written in 1882 by Quirino Mendoza y Cortés (c. 1859 - 1957). The melody was used as the basis for a popular song, "You, Me, and Us," which became a hit for Alma Cogan in the United Kingdom in 1957 (Wikipedia). Just some facts for you and a video of some famous singers singing it.

AIR

OK, so I have been surfing the net this week for my AIR. I have been finding games that are really fun. They are kind of for little kids but I am just learning Spanish. Which makes me not care. They are really cute little games. I am not going to give them out until I give in my AIR. I want to keep you all in suspense.

Online Translator

I was watching the videos and some of the words that they put on the screen I did not know what it meant. So, I look at an online translator. It helped me to understand what was going on in the story. The one I used is http://babelfish.yahoo.com/. It is good for a word or a small phrase.
